Onkyo Corporation is a Japanese electronics company specialising in hi-fi equipment. The company was founded on 17 September 1946. It was founded under the name Osaka Denki Onkyo K.K. at the time and focused on manufacturing the tone arms of a turntable. Later it also came to stereo systems. In 1981, it developed the first double-cassette deck with a high-speed copying function. In 1985, it developed the first CD player with optical data transfer. In early 2012, US-based Gibson acquired a 13% stake in Onkyo Corporation. Onkyo also entered into a partnership with TEAC, with the companies sharing production facilities and research resources. In 2014, Onkyo acquired a large stake in Pioneer's consumer electronics division. In return, Pioneer owns a 16% stake in Onkyo.
