Want to replace your clothes dryer's bearings, but not sure how? This step-by-step guide will help you replace your drum bearings!
What you need.
Always first:
Replacing the clothes dryer drum bearings:
1. Lay the clothes dryer on its front.
The drum bearings are located at the back of the appliance, in the middle of the drum. Therefore, lay the appliance on its front. To do this, first remove the door to avoid damaging it. Unscrew the door hinge to remove the clothes dryer door.
2. Disconnect the air hose.
The air hose is often attached with a screw. Loosen the screw and unscrew the air hose. On the inside is often a kind of air treasure. Pull this out of the unit.
3. Remove the top and side panels.
The top and side panels are secured with screws. Almost all of the screws can be found at the back of the clothes dryer.
4. Detach the protective covers.
You will see two protective covers. One hood for the bearings and one hood for the heating element. Loosen both caps by unscrewing the screws.
5. Detach the heating element.
At the side of the clothes dryer, first disconnect the wiring. You can easily pull these loose. Then remove the heating element. Set the heating element and the protective cover aside.
6. Detach the impeller.
Disconnect the impeller which has emerged behind the heating element. Also disconnect the impeller wiring.
7. Loosen the locking pin.
You will see a locking pin on the back of the unit. This comes out from behind the bearing cap. Loosen the locking pin by bending the little pin that goes through it with pliers and then pulling it out. Save these parts! You will now see another screw. Loosen this one.
8. Remove the back plate.
Remove the entire back plate. The drum will now come out.
9. Remove the drum from the clothes dryer.
First detach the belt from the motor by rotating the drum and pulling the belt downwards. Then lift the drum out of the clothes dryer. You will see some screws still attached on the inside of the drum. Loosen these screws.
10. Attach the new bearings to the drum.
Place the bearings in the right place and secure them with the screws. Put the correct part back on the back plate.
11. Replace the drum.
Place the drum back on the front plate. Place the washer back on the back of the drum. Refasten the locking pin. Use pliers again if necessary.
12. Replace the other components.
Start by replacing the impeller including wiring. Then the heating element including wiring. Then the protective covers of the heating element and the bearings. Then reinstall the side panels and top of the clothes dryer. Reinstall the door to the unit. Well done, you have replaced the bearings and the clothes dryer is ready to use again!
